Game Description
Following Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, Tony Hawk’s Underground is a skateboarding video game and the fifth installment in the Tony Hawk series. For the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance in 2003, it was created by Neversoft and released by Activision. It was released as a budget release for Microsoft Windows in Australia and New Zealand in 2004.
The skateboarding gameplay of earlier Tony Hawk games is carried over into Underground, where players explore areas and accomplish objectives while pulling off tricks. The game has a fresh emphasis on customization; rather than choosing a professional skater, the user designs a custom character. Players can get off their boards and go on foot exploration in the Underground. The storyline follows the protagonist and their friend Eric Sparrow as they separate and become professionals.
The vast customization possibilities, the inclusion of a story, and the product’s classification as an adventure game all reflect the game’s focus on uniqueness. Professional skateboarders in the real world provided their experiences for the story. Reviewers praised the game’s broad appeal, soundtrack, customizability, multiplayer, and plot after its initial release, which was a huge commercial and critical success. Less well received were the graphics and the controls for walking and operating automobiles. In the US, 2.11 million copies of Underground’s PlayStation 2 edition had been sold by December 2007. In 2004, Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 was released as a sequel.

The primary focus of Underground, like other installments in the Tony Hawk’s series, is skating on a number of levels. Using a combination of analog stick and button inputs, the player performs tricks. For instance, by holding and releasing the jump button, the player can start an ollie (a jump trick). The user can move the analogue stick during an ollie and use one of two buttons to execute either a grab trick or a flip trick (such as an impossible or kickflip) (such as a benihana or nose grab). On specific edges and rails, the player can grind; depending on how the analog stick is positioned, the player can do a variety of stunts while grinding. The player is able to perform lip stunts on quarter pipes. The player can maneuver in a variety of ways while skating on flat terrain by pressing different button combinations. Other tricks include wall rides and acid drops.
A balancing meter appears while a grind, lip, or manual trick is being performed; if the player does not stop the metre from moving to the left or right, the character will bail and will take a few seconds to recover. Falling without the board facing down can also result in bailing. A combination is when many tricks are successfully completed without bailing. Comboing increases the player’s score and fills the Special Meter, which when full gives the player access to trick variations like the McTwist and 540 Flip that are more complex and worth more points. The option to dismount one’s skateboard is introduced in Underground, enabling the player to more thoroughly explore levels and access new regions. Each level features at least one vehicle, usually a car, that the player can drive.
Regions in the United States and other nations are used to determine the levels. Before the player can proceed through a level, specific activities that develop the game’s plot must be fulfilled. These activities include score attacks, races, item gathering, and getting through one of the numerous gaps present in a level. A professional skateboarder resides on each level and offers a side mission that unlocks a trick for the Special Meter. Underground has been referred to as an adventure game due to the scale of the stages and how the goals are woven into the narrative. Role-playing gameplay is included since characters can level up their stats, which include jump height and speed, by fulfilling optional goals in a level. Other game modes include cooperative minigames, one of which, dubbed “Firefight,” can be played online in the PlayStation 2 version of the title, and a mode called “free skate” that allows the player to freely roam through levels with no objectives or narrative.
Underground offers a wide range of customization. With the exception of a few situations, like a special sequence late in the game, minigames, and the free skate option, the player designs a custom character for the story mode. The player can construct skate parks using a wide variety of objects, from more unusual additions like buildings and elevated motorway segments to more conventional ones like halfpipes, ramps, funboxes, and grind rails. The time of day and environmental theme of the player’s park can be changed. Level objectives, skateboards, and tricks can all be changed.
Numerous real-life professional skateboarders are represented in the game, including Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Paul Rodriguez, Chad Muska, Mike Vallely, and Stacy Peralta. Iron Man, a spoof of C.H.U.D. named T.H.U.D., and Kiss bassist Gene Simmons all make brief cameos in Underground.
The Game Boy Advance version of the game is rendered in an isometric style using mixed 2D sprites and 3D models while the console versions are fully three-dimensional. There is less focus on the narrative or customizability in this iteration, which is more like a classic Tony Hawk’s game. The mobile version also has limitations.
