The Simpsons: Hit & Run is an action-adventure game released by Vivendi Universal Games in 2003. It was developed by Radical Entertainment and distributed by Vivendi Universal Games. It is the twenty-second installment in the Simpsons video game series and is based on the American animated sitcom The Simpsons.
The Simpson family and their buddy Apu Nahasapeemapetilon witness a number of unusual events in Springfield, including surveillance cameras, mysterious vans, crop circles, and a “new and improved” flavor of the famous soft drink Buzz Cola that causes insanity. They find various unsettling revelations after taking matters into their own hands, and they eventually learn that these incidents are part of a wider alien conspiracy orchestrated by Kang and Kodos.
Exploration and missions are the mainstays of the game, with players racing opponents and interacting with supporting characters on scheduled objectives. Many components prevalent in role-playing games, such as explorable environments and side missions, are also present in the game.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run underwent substantial development beginning in late 2001. The team wanted to set the game apart from The Simpsons: Road Rage, believing that their fresh entrance into the franchise demanded a distinct approach. The open-world design and deep character development were significantly inspired by the Grand Theft Auto series, and the production team repurposed them for the game. This fostered collaboration with the show’s writers and cast, who assisted in the development of the plot and language. It was published on the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in September 2003. Two months later, it was ported to Microsoft Windows.
It garnered largely positive reviews from video game critics upon release, with praise focusing on the video game’s depiction of The Simpsons television series, its parodical take on Grand Theft Auto III, and graphics, while criticism mostly centered on bugs and glitches. It is widely regarded as the best Simpsons tie-in game, with a cult following. The game was also a commercial success, with over 3 million copies sold around the world. At the 2004 Nickelodeon Australian Kids’ Choice Awards, it won the award for Favorite Video Game. It received Greatest Hits, Player’s Choice, and Platinum Hits on the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox, respectively.
