In comparison to prior games, the career mode offers a greater variety of championships, including unconventional touring car styles like Supertruck and Rallycross. The British Touring Car Championship was not included, but this was not a first for the series; still, the franchise kept the TOCA name in the title under permission. Additionally, online play was aggressively promoted and supported on Xbox Live for up to 8 people.
The PC version of the game offers 48 tracks at 31 real-world and invented race venues across the world. These include the Australian V8 Supercars series’ Surfers Paradise and the German DTM series’ Hockenheimring. Catalunya is a bonus track on the PS2 edition. The PlayStation 2 version additionally supports up to 8 PS2 online gamers without the need for broadband Internet access.
In 2005 and 2006, two PSP conversions saw the light of day: Race Driver 2006 in the US and TOCA Race Driver 2 in Europe and Japan. The Ryan McKane character was removed, however, the game kept the scripted career mode that was first presented in the last Race Driver game. First-person cutscenes were used to explain the story, and other characters never addressed the user by name (similar to the storytelling method of later Need for Speed titles). A few months later, the mobile phone version was exclusively made available in the United States.
