Game Description
The Lord of the Rings War of the Ring is a 2003 real-time strategy game (RTS) developed by Liquid Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal Games. It elaborates on the War of the Ring events described in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy book The Lord of the Rings and is set in his invented Middle-earth.
Unlike Peter Jackson’s movies, War of the Ring has no connection to them. The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring are two more book-based (as opposed to film-based) Tolkien games that have licenses from Tolkien Enterprises (2003).

The gameplay is very similar to Warcraft III with some new features that were also in Battle Realms. The player can control hero units with unique abilities while using a similar structure and control scheme. The majority of normal units also possess unique skills. The game also adheres to standard RTS standards like rally points and centralized building control over the unit generation and upgrade purchases.
The ability to set buildings on fire and the ability for soldiers to flip between walking and running are some elements that were carried over from Battle Realms. The game also mimics the yin and yang system from Battle Realms, where winning battles (or performing special actions) would grant a special resource that could be used to purchase units or upgrades. In the previous lord of the rings war in the north, depending on the faction being employed, this resource was known as Yin or Yang; in this one, it is known as Fate. The player can summon heroes, buy their special skills, and trigger unique faction-specific Fate Powers with the Fate Points they earn via fight (such as summoning an Ent or a Balrog). There is also evidence of Warcraft III influence. In a manner akin to the “blight” of the Warcraft III Undead faction, the Minions of Sauron must first “corrupt” the land with “war posts” before they may construct on it. Huorns, which are comparable to Warcraft Night Elf “Ancient Protector” units, are under the power of the player when playing as the Free People.
Places of Power are monuments that, when controlled by the player, grant bonuses to all units (such as greater armor or attack). One is either located on the map (by sending a unit there) or captured from the enemy by the player (killing guards, if any, or else taking it when left unguarded).
Compared to Battle Realms, the lord of the rings war in the north graphics engine is more sophisticated and features changing weather and lighting effects. After a unit has killed an enemy unit, the engine can provide aesthetic candy like billowing grass and units with blood-stained weapons.
The lord of the rings: war in the north records the number of enemy units killed by each of the player’s units as part of the interface when each is selected.
