The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Game Description
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 hack and slash action game for the PlayStation 2 and Windows developed by EA Redwood Shores. Hypnos Entertainment ported it to the GameCube and Xbox, Griptonite Games ported it to the Game Boy Advance, JAMDAT ported it to mobile, and Beenox ported it to OS X. Electronic Arts published the game. It is the sequel to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which was released in 2002.
The game is based on Peter Jackson’s 2002 film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and his 2003 film The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King cast, both of which were released shortly after the game. Because the game is not an adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1954 novel The Return of the King, the third volume in The Lord of the Rings series, anything from the novel that is not specifically mentioned or depicted in the films cannot be represented in the game. This is due to the fact that, at the time, Vivendi Universal Games, in collaboration with Tolkien Enterprises, held the rights to the video game adaptations of Tolkien’s literary works, whereas Electronic Arts held the rights to the video game adaptations of the New Line Cinema films.
In terms of gameplay, the game is similar to its predecessor, but it differs by adding multiple storylines, more playable characters, and increased interaction with the environment. For some missions, a two-player co-op mode is also available. The Return of the King, like The Two Towers, was developed in close collaboration with the filmmakers, with many of the actual reference photos, drawings, models, props, and other assets from the film being used. Although the camera positioning and short length were criticized, the game received positive critical reception for its graphics, audio, and gameplay.
