The second of two expansions for the World War II first-person shooter computer game Battlefield 1942 is Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII. It was released on 4 September 2003 in North America and 5 September 2003 in Europe for Microsoft Windows. On October 25, 2004, it was also released for Mac OS X.

Secret Weaponry of WWII adds additional weapons, vehicles, battles, factions, and a new gameplay style that focuses on completing objectives rather than eliminating the opponent army to the original game. These additional additions assist to provide diversity to the gameplay of its predecessor without completely redesigning the series. While an Allied engineer’s original job of being able to repair vehicles may still exist, his long-ranged rifle has been replaced with a shotgun that is effective at short distances.

Players take on the role of a soldier in a two-sided conflict, similar to Battlefield 1942, and can choose whatever weapons and/or vehicles they want to utilize to achieve victory on the battlefield. In a typical “Conquest” mode, the team that works together with most efficiently usually wins by lowering the adversaries’ tickets to zero. (A team loses tickets when one of its members is killed, as well as when the opposing team controls the majority of the map’s capture locations.) Weapons in Secret Weapons of WWII are meant to work in tandem with other weapons to compensate for flaws and optimize strengths, even more so than in Battlefield 1942.

An objective-based mode was introduced in Secret Weapons of WWII, in which players focus on completing specified tasks in order to win the war. On Essen, for example, German soldiers must prevent Allied forces from destroying critical parts of a weapons factory. If the Allies succeed in achieving these goals, the German tickets are substantially decreased, and the Allies usually win the game.

New weaponry and vehicles have been added to the basic Allied (US) and Axis (German) armies, as well as the development of two whole new factions, the SAS (British Commandos) and the German Elite Troops (the Waffen-SS and the Fallschirmjager). The USMC, RAF, and Luftwaffe are among the three new factions included in the upgrade package. Each faction has its own set of weaponry that can only be earned by playing as that faction or by capturing a fallen enemy soldier. They also have exclusive vehicles available just at their bases. Despite the addition of these new groups, the expansion pack’s maps are all Axis vs. Allies, as is customary in the Battlefield series.

The Jet Pack, which allows players to fly in the air while firing a weapon, is also noteworthy. To keep the game balanced, the Jet Pack is prone to blowing up while under fire, killing the player instantly. The Jet Pack, unlike other weapons, is not exclusive to one faction; instead, it can be obtained at one or more spots throughout a map as an item that replaces the player’s current gear. There are only four maps in which the Jet Pack is available.
