Frogger 2 Swampy’s Revenge is a PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Microsoft Windows, and Dreamcast action video game developed by Blitz Games and published by Hasbro Interactive. Frogger 2 Swampy’s Revenge is part of the Frogger series and the sequel to the 1997 remake of Frogger, and it features similar 4-way movement gameplay in a 3D world with six different environments. Unlike its predecessor, Frogger 2 includes a variety of playable characters, multiple multiplayer modes, and an in-game storyline. Frogger 2 Swampys Revenge was supposed to be ported to the Nintendo 64, but it was later canceled.

The PC and console versions of Frogger 2 Swampy’s Revenge feature significant gameplay changes that set it apart from its predecessor. Although the Frogger series’ gameplay objective remains unchanged (the player must collect five small frogs to win Frogger 2 Swampys Revenge while avoiding level-specific obstacles and enemies), the overall gameplay has been retooled to a more traditional platformer. The level design structure has been changed to a more linear format, as opposed to its predecessor’s complex level maps, which required the player to actively explore and seek out the frogs. Because the levels are linear, all five frogs are placed sparingly throughout each level, acting as checkpoints for the player if they lose a life. The gameplay also lacks a time limit, though the player is graded on how quickly they completed the level on the results screen.

The gameplay has also been greatly expanded over its predecessor. Players can now choose from a variety of frogs (in story mode, players alternate between Frogger and Lillie), though they all have the same move set. Frogger’s “super jump” from the first game was expanded to allow him to perform a “double jump” after using it, which can be used to clear platforms with short gaps in front of them. Similarly, Frogger’s ability to croak has been tweaked to allow players to use it as a sort of beacon to find the small frogs—when Frogger croaks (represented by a circle that expands outwards from him), the small frogs will croak back through a similar beacon that the player can use to determine their location. Frogger also retains the ability to use his tongue to consume insects, which, as in the previous game, can grant the player a higher score or an extra life depending on the insect consumed. Levels now have 25 coins scattered throughout them that the player can collect, with the reward for collecting all of them in one level playthrough being a new game mode or an additional playable character. Frogger 2 Swampys Revenge also has a multiplayer mode that can support up to four players in the Dreamcast and PC versions (two in the PlayStation version and four with a multitap).

The Game Boy Color version of Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge, on the other hand, plays much closer to the original arcade game, despite some changes. Instead of collecting frogs, the player must simply complete each level while avoiding obstacles along the way. Flags serve as checkpoints for the player to respawn at if he loses a life, and gems can be collected to increase the player’s score. There is also a time limit, so the player must complete the level as quickly as possible before the time runs out. The player must complete twenty-four levels spread across five worlds (Frog Ponds, Gator Lairs, Ice Caves, Lava Pits, and Lost Mines in chronological order), with Frogger and Lillie as playable characters.
