Driver 3 (stylized as DRIV3R) is the third installment in the Driver series, released in 2004. Reflections Interactive created it, Atari, Inc. published it, and it was released in June 2004 on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and mobile phones, March 2005 on Microsoft Windows, and October 2005 on Game Boy Advance. The plot of Driv3r PS2 revolves around players taking on the role of John Tanner, an undercover FBI agent, as he investigates a car-smuggling ring across three countries in order to identify and arrest its boss and learn who they plan to sell a cache of stolen cars to. The game improved on its predecessors by including on-foot sections, gun combat, and drive-by shooting, as well as virtual recreations of three major cities – Miami, Nice, and Istanbul – a free-roam game mode, and an enhancement to the series’ film-making “director mode.”
Additional ports for the Nintendo GameCube and N-Gage were planned but later scrapped. Except for the PC edition, which received negative feedback from critics, Driver received mixed reviews upon its initial release. Driver: Parallel Lines (2006) followed Driver before being followed by a direct sequel, Driver: San Francisco, in 2011.
