Because Devastation is built on the Unreal 2 game engine, it contains basic first-person shooter gameplay similar to Unreal 2. The game can be played in two modes: “arcade” and “tactical.” The arcade mode has fast-paced action comparable to many first-person shooters, while the tactical mode has slower gameplay closer to tactical shooters like Counter-Strike.
The single-player game emphasizes cooperative gameplay. At any given time, the player can have a team of up to several NPCs following them. Attack, defend, follow, or stop are the four options available to each NPC. NPCs commanded to attack can go from the beginning to the finish of the level without the player’s assistance, albeit if they get too far ahead of the player, they will stop and wait for the player to catch up. If any NPC squadmate is killed at the game’s early levels, the game ends, although squadmate health regenerates quickly, making this part of gameplay less frustrating.
The first third of the game is made up of linear levels, with the player’s goal being to get from the beginning to the end. The player receives a cloning machine around a third of the way through the game, allowing them and their teammates to revive from death a limitless number of times. Allowing the opponent to seize and destroy the player’s cloning machine is the only way to “lose” the game at this stage. From this point forward, all levels are played in a capture the flag format, with the rebel and Grathius teams starting on opposite ends of a non-linear level, each tasked with seizing the other’s cloning apparatus.
There are also 28 different weapons in Devastation, grouped into eight categories: melee, handguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, squad support weapons, and miscellaneous weapons.
Multiplayer
Streetwar
A deathmatch game type, the aim of which is to kill as many enemies as possible in the time limit or reach the kill limit before anyone else.
Capture The Flag
The Resistance and Conformists teams go head-to-head to take each other’s flags and return them, more than one flag per team can be added to a map.
Territories
In Territories mode, the goal is to retrieve security codes from a system. These codes will allow you to hack hostile laser fences, destroying the enemy spawn location and effectively defeating the enemy team.
