Burnout 3: Takedown is a 2004 racing video game released by Electronic Arts and developed by Criterion Games. It’s the third installment in the Burnout franchise, which is known for its fast-paced arcade racing. The usage of boost, acquired by hazardous driving, to quickly enhance a car’s speed is a series mainstay. Takedowns are a new mechanic in Burnout 3 that allows players to bash their opponents until they crash. By filling up and expanding the boost meter, takedowns function in tandem with the boost mechanism. Aside from traditional circuit races, the game includes scenarios for conducting Takedowns on other vehicles and causing monetary damage at a busy intersection. Each game type has its own single-player campaign mode called World Tour, which is the main way to gain new and faster cars. Both online and split-screen multiplayer is supported in the game.
Criterion, a UK-based production team, had been working on a skating video game with publisher Electronic Arts (EA) prior to the release of Burnout 3: Takedown. Disagreements about the game’s creative direction, however, resulted in its termination and a rift between the two firms. EA approached Criterion about rejoining and collaborating on a game, and in June 2003, Criterion began development on Burnout 3: Takedown on the condition that EA would not meddle in the creative process. EA acquired Criterion and the Burnout series a year later; their high expectations for Burnout 3: Takedown influenced the decision. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game systems were released in September 2004.
Burnout 3: Takedown garnered widespread critical praise upon its release, becoming one of the highest-rated racing video games of all time and widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time. The move to a more aggressive racing game and the addition of gameplay concepts like Takedowns were praised by critics. Reviewers lauded the addicting gameplay and aesthetics, with many placing Burnout 3: Takedown among the finest games published on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game went on to receive a slew of accolades, including three British Academy Games Awards. The game has received overwhelmingly favorable reviews, with several newspapers hailing it as the best arcade racer ever developed and the pinnacle of the Burnout franchise. Burnout Revenge, the sequel to Takedown, was published in September 2005.
