Backyard Hockey is a series of ice hockey video games developed by Humongous Entertainment and Mistic Software and released by Atari and Infogrames. It was first launched for Microsoft Windows in June 2002. Additional games for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS were released. The original Backyard Hockey, Backyard Hockey 2005, Backyard Hockey for Game Boy Advance, and Backyard Hockey for Nintendo DS are the four Backyard Hockey games that have been released. Backyard Hockey was produced alone by Humongous Entertainment for the original and 2005 editions, but jointly by Humongous and Mistic Software for the Game Boy and DS versions.
Players assemble their own teams from a pool of over 30 “neighborhood kids,” each with their own talents and limitations, similar to earlier titles in the Backyard Sports series. As youngsters, players can choose from a number of National Hockey League players, including Steve Yzerman, Mike Modano, Joe Sakic, Jaromir Jágr, Jarome Iginla, Martin Brodeur, and Curt Joseph.
The game allows players to control their character in an ice hockey game. Power-ups emerge at center ice at various moments during a game. Power-ups provide assistance to the team that obtains them, such as causing all enemy players to fall down or super speed. Unlike most ice hockey games, fighting is not allowed in Backyard Hockey, and penalties are rarely called.
