Anno 1602: Creation of a New World, also known as 1602 A.D. in North America, is a 1998 construction and management video game released by Sunflowers Interactive and developed by Max Design. Set in the early modern period, the player must build colonies on small islands while managing resources, exploration, diplomacy, and trade. Anno 1602 design is notable for attempting to implement ‘progressive’ artificial intelligence, which means that the game’s pace changes in response to how quickly players act.

Anno 1602 was a commercial smash that drew buyers from outside the usual demographic of German computer games, including a sizable proportion of female customers. It was the best-selling computer game in the German market in 1998, and it remained the region’s best-selling game of all time by 2003, with over 1.7 million units sold in German-speaking countries. Anno1602 was less successful in international markets, but by 2004, it had sold over 2.7 million copies worldwide.
