    The Godfather

    Game Description

The Godfather is an open-world action-adventure video game released in 2006 by Electronic Arts. It was developed by EA Redwood Shores and published by EA. It was first released in March 2006 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and the original Xbox. It was later released as The Godfather: Mob Wars for the PlayStation Portable, The Godfather for the Xbox 360, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition for the Wii, and The Godfather: The Don’s Edition for the PlayStation 3.

Based on the 1972 film The Godfather, the game follows Aldo Trapani, a non-canon character who is recruited into the Corleone family and works his way up to its ranks while seeking vengeance against his father’s killers. The game’s story intersects with the film on several occasions, depicting major events from Aldo’s point of view or showing him perform off-screen actions; for example, he avenges Bonasera’s daughter, drives Vito Corleone to the hospital after he is shot, plants the gun for Michael Corleone to kill Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey, and places the horse’s head in Jack Woltz’s bed. The game is based on the 1972 film The Godfather 2 and follows Aldo Trapani, a non-canon character who is recruited into the Corleone family and works his way up to its ranks while seeking vengeance against his father’s killers. The Godfather received mostly positive reviews across the board, though the PlayStation Portable version was widely regarded as inferior to the others. The Godfather 2 game was a commercial success, with more than two million units sold. The Godfather Part II, based on the 1974 film, was released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows, but it received mixed reviews and did not sell as well as the first game, prompting EA to abandon plans for a third film adaptation.

  • Sonic Riders

    Sonic Riders

    Game Description

Sonic Riders is a 2006 racing video game for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in which the player controls Sonic the Hedgehog characters on hoverboards. In the game’s 16 tracks, the player competes in story and battle modes against characters controlled by computers or other players. It was created by Sonic Team and Now Production, published by Sega, and released in Japan and North America in February 2006. The following month, it was released in Europe, and at the end of the year, it was released for Windows. Backbone Entertainment’s Game Boy Advance version was canceled.

The game was released to commemorate the Sonic series’ 15th anniversary, and it was the first Sonic racing game since Sonic R, a Traveller’s Tales game released in 1997. Sonic Team wanted to create a game that was better than any previous Sonic racing game. It was created to appeal to fans of Sonic and extreme sports video games, and the development team took no inspiration from previous games. Sonic Riders zero gravity was also the final Sonic title to feature franchise co-creator Yuji Naka, who served as executive producer and left Sega shortly after its release.

Sonic Riders zero gravity received mixed reviews upon its initial release, but it was a commercial success, and it was later re-released under the GameCube and PlayStation 2 bestseller lines. Reviewers panned the game’s gameplay, controls, and overall design while praising the visual style, soundtrack, and sense of speed while racing. Overall, they thought it was a mediocre game—both within the Sonic franchise and the racing game medium—that had its highlights but ultimately fell short due to its flaws. Despite mixed reviews, two sequels were developed and released: Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity (2008) and Sonic Free Riders (2010).

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    Game Description

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is an action-adventure video game released in 2007. It is based on the same-named 2007 film. The game was released for mobile devices, the Nintendo DS, the PlayStation Portable, Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3, the Wii, the Xbox 360, the Game Boy Advance, and Mac OS X.

Harry Potter’s theme is to explore Hogwarts and follow the plot of the book and film. EA encouraged fan participation in the game’s development and collaborated with a fan council. Instead of the action-oriented Goblet of Fire, the game returns to the sandbox style of the first three games. Hogwarts, like any sandbox, is mostly explorable, and there are “discovery points” that provide rewards to the player and can be activated by completing side missions. There are also battles between student groups, as shown in the game trailer.

    Gameplay

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix immerses the player in the Harry Potter universe, combining movie blueprints, J.K. Rowling’s drawings, and book descriptions to recreate well-known locations such as the Ministry of Magic, and Grimmauld Place, and Little Whinging. In addition to the main missions, as part of the new sandbox style of play, players can explore Hogwarts and interact with objects, casting magical spells to earn Discovery Points. Slytherins can be dueled in the Entrance Courtyard, Paved Courtyard, and specific floor corridors. Throughout the story, one can also duel. The majority of them are portrayed as Harry. Nonetheless, near the end, one will be able to play as Sirius Black and Dumbledore in various duels. Earning Discovery points increases the power of owned spells as well as earning player bonuses such as behind-the-scenes videos and trophies, which can be viewed in the Room of Rewards. Items in the room, such as trophies, can also be unlocked by participating in mini-games like Exploding Snap, Wizard chess, and Gobstones. There are various missions to complete that correspond to the plot of the film, such as recruiting Dumbledore’s Army members or wreaking havoc when Umbridge is appointed Headmistress.

The most significant change is the addition of Pro Kids to the Baseball series. Starting with this game, all of the kids are on the bleachers during the player draught; previously, only a subset of the kids was on the bleachers. The game also introduces the concepts of “good days” and “bad days,” in which the players’ stats will increase or decrease at random or in response to external conditions. Batting powerups can now be obtained through double plays; previously, they could only be obtained by hitting powerup pitches.

Each opposing team now has a Backyard Kid and a Pro Kid as captains in Season Mode. In Season Mode, the Pick-Up Game fields are now available; the player selects one as their home field. Several Backyard Kids’ statistics have been updated. The ability to create a custom player has been added; this feature was first introduced in Backyard Football.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a 2002 vehicle simulation video game for Microsoft Windows. It is a stand-alone expansion for MechWarrior 4: Vengeance that is based on the BattleTech MechWarrior game universe.

The expansions Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries, Clan, and Inner Sphere were re-released for free. By April 22, 2010, Microsoft had cleared its free release, and MekTek released MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries to the general public as a free download on April 30. However, MekTek.net and related services crashed due to a massive influx of 100,000 downloads and website accesses. On May 1, MekTek recovered the MekMatch matchmaking service, and the forum was restored the following day.

MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries was no longer free in the years that followed. MekTek announced their intention to exit the BattleTech franchise, and a new group emerged interested in maintaining free versions but ran into difficulties obtaining permission to continue offering the game as a free download.

  • Emperor: Battle for Dune

    Emperor: Battle for Dune

    Game Description

Emperor: Battle for Dune is a Dune video game that was released on June 12, 2001, by Westwood Studios. It is set in Frank Herbert’s science fiction universe of Dune. It is the third real-time strategy game set in the Dune universe, succeeding Dune II and Dune 2000. While Dune II was a completely separate story from Dune, and Dune 2000 was a remake of Dune II, Emperor is a direct sequel to the previous games. It is, in particular, a sequel to Dune 2000, picking up where the previous film left off, with several of the characters and actors returning. Emperor, like Dune 2000 and many other Westwood games before it, includes cut scenes filmed with live actors.

    Gameplay

The player controls one of three Houses and must compete for control of the spiced brew on the planet Arrakis. Similar to previous Westwood Studios real-time strategy titles, the player harvests spice, build a base, and trains units to destroy one or more enemies. Battles begin with a black shroud obscuring unseen areas of the map, and a grey fog of war gradually obscures areas of the map that are no longer visible to the player’s units.

Each House receives a distinct set of units tailored to the character of the House, with the Atreides employing mechs and sonic weapons, the Harkonnen employing tanks and flame weapons, and Ordos units utilizing energy shields and self-healing. Capturing an enemy building that can manufacture the desired units allows players to gain access to the units of another House. During the campaign, sub-factions such as the Fremen, Ix, Tleilaxu, Guild, and Imperial Sardaukar are introduced that may ally with the player, allowing them to build special units. Unlike in Dune 2000, where the campaign map only influenced the design of the next mission’s battlefield, in Emperor, players are presented with options that can attract or repel sub-factions, as well as influence the overall story’s progression.

Each of the three major factions has its own single-player campaign with full-motion video cut scenes. Online multiplayer, local area networks, and skirmish battles against computer opponents were also options.
