2002 FIFA World Cup

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of FIFA member associations. The tournament was held in South Korea and Japan from 31 May to 30 June 2002, becoming the first World Cup to be held in Asia. A total of 32 teams, divided into eight groups of four, participated in the tournament.

The 2002 World Cup was won by Brazil, who beat Germany 2-0 in the final. Brazil became the first team to win the World Cup five times, and also the first to win the tournament outside of Europe and South America. The tournament also saw the emergence of new stars such as Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho, who helped lead Brazil to victory.

The 2002 World Cup was notable for a number of reasons. It was the first time that the World Cup had been held in Asia, and the first time that it had been held in two countries (South Korea and Japan). The tournament also saw the introduction of the Golden Goal rule, which allowed a team to win a match if they scored a goal in extra time.

The 2002 World Cup was also notable for the strong performances of several underdogs. Senegal, making its World Cup debut, shocked the world by defeating France 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament. South Korea also made a memorable run to the semifinals, becoming the first Asian team to reach that stage of the World Cup.

In the knockout stage of the tournament, Brazil, Germany, and Turkey emerged as the favorites to win the title. Brazil and Germany both cruised through the quarterfinals, setting up a highly-anticipated matchup in the semifinals. Brazil defeated Turkey 1-0 to advance to the final, while Germany beat South Korea 1-0 to secure their place in the final.

In the final, Brazil faced off against Germany in a rematch of the 1994 World Cup final. Brazil took the lead in the 67th minute when Ronaldo scored, and they doubled their lead in the 79th minute when Rivaldo scored from a free kick. Germany fought hard to get back into the match, but they were unable to find the back of the net, and Brazil emerged as the champions of the 2002 World Cup.

Overall, the 2002 World Cup was a memorable and exciting tournament, with a number of upsets and memorable moments. Brazil’s victory marked the beginning of a new era in world football, and the tournament helped to establish South Korea and Japan as major players on the international football scene.
