    Game Description

    Metal Slug is a 1996 run-and-gun arcade video game created by Nazca Corporation and published by SNK for the Neo Geo MVS console. It is the first book in the series of the same name. Set in 2028, players take on the roles of Peregrine Falcon Strike Force troops Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving in a fight to overturn Donald Morden’s coup d’état and prevent the establishment of a New World Order.

    Metal Slug was designed by the same team behind other Irem products with a similar presentation, such as In the Hunt and GunForce II, with the basic goal during development being a simple but entertaining side-scrolling shooter with an easy control scheme and visuals influenced by Hayao Miyazaki’s works. Before the project was heavily overhauled after a poor response during location testing and the length was extended at SNK’s request to make the game more appealing to home players while incorporating more platform elements into its design, the game was originally more slower-paced, revolving around players controlling the titular tank instead of soldiers across shorter and less complex missions with a darker atmosphere.

    Metal Slug had a great response from players and critics upon its initial release, with praise for its sense of humor, smooth hand-drawn animation, and fast-paced two-player combat. Other third-party developers ported the game to other platforms, with various alterations and additions compared to the VMS original, as well as included it on compilations and re-releasing it through download services for other systems, among other methods to play it. Its popularity spawned a franchise with numerous sequels, remakes, and spin-offs. Metal Slug 2, a direct sequel, was released in 1998.

    Metal Slug is a run-and-gun game similar to Contra in which players take on the roles of captain Marco Rossi and lieutenant Tarma Roving of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force, shooting at an endless stream of adversaries to accomplish each objective. At this moment, players are confronted with a boss, who is usually larger and more difficult than other adversaries. Players can find several weapon upgrades and the eponymous tanks as they go through each level. The tanks, known as the SV-001 and SV-002, boost the player’s offensive while also improving their defense.

    Players can use a knife to perform melee attacks in addition to shooting. Because the player does not perish if he or she comes into touch with foes, several of the enemy forces have melee attacks. [1] Much of the game’s landscape is destructible, revealing extra objects or power-ups on occasion. Throughout a level, the player will come across prisoners of war (POWs) who, if released, will provide benefits in the form of random items or weaponry. The player obtains a scoring bonus dependent on the number of POWs rescued at the end of each level. The number of freed POWs resets to zero if the player dies before the end of the level. If players are hit by enemy fire, collide with solid stage obstructions, or fall off-stage, they will lose a life, and the game will end until they insert more credits into the arcade machine to continue playing.

    Six missions take place in a variety of settings, including woodlands, garrisoned cities, cold mountain slopes, gorges, and military camps. The great majority of adversaries are soldiers with armament appropriate to their position. Tanks, mobile artillery, aircraft, armored personnel carriers, and technicals are among the mechanized foes. Much of the humor in the game comes from how the adversaries are depicted; the player frequently finds them sunbathing, roasting food over a fire, or speaking. When they see the player, they usually scream loudly and attempt to flee or fight back.
