Pong is an Atari table tennis-themed twitch arcade sports video game with rudimentary two-dimensional visuals that was first launched in 1972. It was one of the first arcade video games; Allan Alcorn invented it as a training exercise assigned to him by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, but Bushnell and Atari co-founder Ted Dabney were impressed with Alcorn’s work and chose to manufacture it. The game’s premise was inspired by an electronic ping-pong game included in the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console. Magnavox later sued Atari for patent infringement in return.
Pong was the first commercially successful video game, and it, together with the Magnavox Odyssey, helped to start the video game industry. Several firms began making games that closely resembled its gameplay soon after its release. Eventually, Atari’s competitors launched new sorts of video games that strayed from Pong’s original format to varying degrees, prompting Atari to encourage its workers to look beyond Ping Pong and create other innovative games.
Atari created many Ping Pong game sequels that expanded on the original’s gameplay by adding new features. Atari offered a home version of Pong exclusively through Sears retail shops during the 1975 Christmas season. The home version was also a commercial hit, spawning a slew of clones. Following its initial release, the game was remade for a variety of home and portable systems. Because of its cultural significance, Ping Pong is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection in Washington, D.C.

Ping Pong is a two-dimensional sport that is similar to table tennis. The player moves an in-game paddle vertically across the left or right side of the screen to control it. They can battle against another player who controls the opposite side’s second paddle. The paddles are used by the players to strike the ball back and forth. The goal is for each player to score eleven points before the other; points are scored when one player fails to return the ball to the other.
