Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is an Activision-published music rhythm video game created by Neversoft. It’s the third main entry in the Guitar Hero franchise. Following Activision’s acquisition of RedOctane and MTV Games’ acquisition of Harmonix, the series’ previous development studio, it is the first game in the series to be produced by Neversoft. In October 2007, the game was released globally on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360, with Budcat Creations supporting Neversoft on the PlayStation 2 port and Vicarious Visions primarily working on the Wii port. The game’s Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X versions were released later in 2007 by Aspyr.
The core gameplay from previous Guitar Hero games is retained, in which the player utilizes a guitar-shaped controller to replicate the playing of lead, bass, and rhythm guitar parts in rock songs by playing in time to scrolling notes on-screen. A new Co-Op Career option and competitive challenges put the player against in-game characters and other players, in addition to current single-player Career modes. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the first game in the series to incorporate online multiplayer, which is available on PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360. The game comes with around 70 songs at first, the majority of them are master tracks. Additional tracks can be downloaded for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions. Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) and Slash (of Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver) make appearances in the game as both guitar combat opponents and playable characters. Bret Michaels (of Poison) is a non-playable character in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows editions.
Critics and fans praised the game, however, critics observed a stylistic difference between it and earlier installments, which they attributed to Neversoft’s first attempt at developing the series. The game is frequently criticized for being too difficult, with “walls of notes” that are difficult to complete, which has resulted in note placement changes in subsequent games in the series. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, according to Activision, is the best-selling video game of 2007, both in terms of units sold and money earned, and it is the first single retail video game to sell over one billion dollars. The company also claimed that it is the second-best-selling video game title since 1995, following Wii Play, and is one of the best-selling third-party games available for the Wii.
