Platform game Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex was created by Traveller’s Tales and released by Universal Interactive Studios in 2001. The GameCube version was created by Eurocom, and it was initially launched for the PlayStation 2 before being converted to the Xbox and other platforms. Before being altered in 2020 for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, the Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex was intended to be a successor to Crash Bandicoot: Warped.
The Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex is the sixth overall entry in the Crash Bandicoot video game series and the fourth main installment. It is the first game in the entire series that wasn’t made just for the PlayStation platform. Crunch Bandicoot, a genetically upgraded bandicoot made by Doctor Neo Cortex, the series’ main antagonist, who has tapped into the power of a gang of destructive mask spirits known as the Elementals, first appears in the storyline. In order to stop Cortex from using Crunch as a weapon to conquer the world, Crash Bandicoot and his sister Coco must tour the globe collecting specialized Crystals. These Crystals will put the Elementals back into a state of hibernation.
The game received mixed reviews from critics, with many claiming that it didn’t add much new to the PlayStation predecessors’ formulas. 1.56 million copies of the PlayStation 2 version were sold in North America, and the Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex met the criteria for several best-seller lists, including the Platinum Range for the PlayStation 2, Xbox Classics, and Player’s Choice on the GameCube. It debuted in December 2007 as a launch title for the Xbox Originals collection of playable original Xbox games available for download through the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace.

The major adversaries of the plot are Doctor Neo Cortex, his new superweapon Crunch Bandicoot, and Crunch’s power sources, the rebel Elementals. The player controls Crash and Coco Bandicoot in the platform Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex, where they must collect 25 Crystals. The majority of the game is played in a “Virtual Reality (VR) Hub System” that Coco designed to aid Crash in collecting Crystals. There are five “VR Hubs” in the VR Hub System, however only the first is originally accessible. Five teleportation gates to various levels are available at each VR Hub. Finding and obtaining the Crystal that is buried in the environment is the objective of each level. The Crystal may be found at the conclusion of some levels or may have to be acquired by successfully completing a particular challenge. The majority of levels have a “Bonus Platform” that connects to a unique bonus area where the player must make their way through a maze and collect everything they come across. If a bonus region is finished, it cannot be played again without replaying the level. A sixth teleportation portal leading to a boss battle with Crunch will arise once all five stages in a VR Hub have been completed. The next VR Hub will be playable after you defeat the boss. The Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex is over when all 25 Crystals have been obtained and Doctor Cortex and Crunch have been eliminated.
For added achievement, gems and colored gems can be gathered in addition to crystals. The player receives gems if they successfully unlock all of the boxes in a level or finish the secret section. Colored Gems can be found in particular levels and open doors to secret places. Re-entering a level where the Crystal has already been obtained will earn you “Relics.” The player must start the “Time Trial” mode in order to complete a level in the allotted amount of time, which is displayed before the player enters a level. When entering a level to start a time trial run, the player must touch the floating stopwatch near the level’s start to start the timer; otherwise, the level can be played normally. The next step is for the player to rush through the level. Yellow containers with the numbers one, two, or three on them are strewn about the level. The timer is frozen for the specified number of seconds when one of these crates is broken. The level can be played through as many times as the player wants in the Time Trial mode because no lives are lost. Depending on how poorly the player does in the final round, Sapphire, Gold, or Platinum Relics can be won. The player has access to a hidden level after receiving the first five Relics. The Secret Warp Room then unlocks a new level every five relics. Before the Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex can be finished completely, the levels of the Secret Warp Room must be accomplished.
The gameplay begins with Crash and Coco Bandicoot each having five lives. When Crash and Coco take damage from an opponent’s strike or sustain any other kind of injury, they lose a life. One can obtain additional lives by gathering 100 “Wumpa Fruits” or by cracking open a special box. Obtaining an Aku Aku mask will protect Crash and Coco from enemy assault. Three of these masks are required to gain temporary immunity to all small threats. Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex ends if Crash or Coco runs out of lives. On the “Game over” screen, you can choose “Continue” to continue the game.
