  • Sonic R

    Sonic R

    Game Description

Sonic R is a Sega Saturn racing video game released in 1997 by Traveller’s Tales and Sonic Team. It is the third racer in the Sonic Hedgehog series and the first to use 3D computer graphics. The player controls one of ten Sonic characters as they race through various Sonic-themed race tracks in an attempt to stop Doctor Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds and enslaving the world. Sonic R has both single-player and multiplayer game modes, and while it is similar to kart racing games like Mario Kart, it focuses on jumping and exploration. Players can unlock secret characters by collecting items and completing objectives.

Development began nine months after the completion of Sonic 3D Blast in 1996. It was Traveller’s Tales and Sonic Team’s second collaboration, and it was designed to take advantage of the Saturn hardware. Sonic Team created the race tracks, while Traveller’s Tales implemented and programmed them using a custom game engine. Richard Jacques composed the soundtrack, and several tracks from the spriters resource sonic r, most notably “Super Sonic Racing,” have been reused in subsequent Sonic games. Sega released the spriters resource sonic r for the Saturn in late 1997, Windows the following year, and the GameCube and PlayStation 2 in 2005 as part of the Sonic Gems Collection.

Sonic R was Saturn’s only original Sonic title; Sonic 3D Blast is a port of the Mega Drive game, and Sonic Jam is a compilation of the first four Sonic games. The spriters resource sonic r received mixed reviews at first, with a more negative reception later on. It received praise for its visuals and level design, but it was panned for its controls and a short length. Meanwhile, Jacques’ soundtrack divided fans, who either thought it was catchy and well-produced or thought it was out of place in a racing game. Sega would revisit the racing genre in future Sonic games as a result of an interest in Sonic R, leading to the development of titles such as Sonic Riders (2006).

  • Guitar Hero World Tour

    Guitar Hero World Tour

    Game Description

Guitar Hero World Tour (originally known as Guitar Hero IV or Guitar Hero IV: World Tour) is a music rhythm video game published by Activision. It is the fourth major entry in the Guitar Hero series. Guitar Hero World Tour was released in North America in October 2008 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 consoles, and in Europe and Australia a month later. Aspyr later released a version of World Tour for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.

While Guitar Hero World Tour songs retain the use of a guitar-shaped controller to simulate rock music playing, Guitar Hero World Tour songs are the first game in the Guitar Hero series to include drum and microphone controllers for percussion and vocal parts, similar to the competing Rock Band series of games. The “Music Studio” mode in the game allows users to create new songs, which can then be uploaded and shared via the “GHTunes” service.

World Tour received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the quality of the instrument controllers, the customization options, and Guitar Hero World Tour song’s difficulty improvements over the previous Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

  • Myst

    Myst

    Game Description

The Miller brothers, Robyn and Rand, created Myst, a graphic adventure puzzle video game. It was created by Cyan, Inc., published by Broderbund, and first released in 1993 for the Macintosh personal computer platform. In the Myst game, players travel to the island of Myst using a special book. There, players solve puzzles to travel to four other worlds known as Ages, which reveal the game’s characters’ backstories.

The Miller brothers got their start in video game development by making games for kids. They created Myst as their first adult game, with funding from publisher Sunsoft. Cyan’s largest project to date, development began in 1991. Myst’s design and production of its graphics, which were state-of-the-art but static, were influenced by time constraints. Robyn Miller composed 40 minutes of synthesized music for the Myst soundtrack.

Myst was a surprise success. Critics praised the game’s ability to immerse players in its fictional world. Myst was the best-selling PC game until The Sims surpassed it in sales in 2002, selling more than six million copies. Myst aided in the adoption of the new CD-ROM format, inspired a multimedia franchise, and spawned clones, parodies, and new video game genres. There have been numerous remakes and postings of the game to other platforms, as well as spin-off novels and other media.

    DevelopersCyan
    Release date1993
    GenreAdventure, Puzzle

    [title] Gameplay

Myst’s gameplay is a first-person exploration of an interactive world. On some screens, players can interact with specific objects by clicking or dragging them. The player moves by clicking on the screen’s locations; the scene then crossfades into another frame, allowing the player to explore the new area. Myst has an optional “Zip” feature that allows players to quickly cross previously explored areas; when a lightning bolt cursor appears, players can click and skip several frames to another location. While this allows for faster travel, it can also cause players to miss important items and clues. Some items, such as journal pages that provide backstory, can be carried by the player and read. Players can only carry a single page at a time, and pages return to their original locations when dropped.

The player must fully explore the island of Myst in order to complete Myst. There, the player discovers and follows clues to be transported to several “Ages,” each of which is a self-contained mini-world, via “linking books.” To complete the exploration of each of the Ages—Selenic, Stones, Mechanical, and Channelwood—the user must solve a series of logical, interconnected puzzles. Objects and information discovered in one Age may be required to solve puzzles in another Age or to complete Myst’s main puzzle. To activate a switch, for example, players must first discover the combination to a safe, open it, and use the matches found within to start a boiler.

Aside from its primarily nonverbal storytelling, Myst toothbrush gameplay is unique among adventure computer games in a number of ways. At the start of the game, the player is given very little backstory and no obvious goals or objectives are laid out. This means that players should just start exploring. There are no obvious enemies, no physical violence, no time limit to finish the game, and no danger of dying at any point. Myst toothbrush game progresses at its own pace and is solved by a combination of patience, observation, and logical thinking.

  • Manhunt 2

    Manhunt 2

    Game Description

Rockstar Games’ Manhunt 2 is a psychological horror stealth video game. Rockstar London created it for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 2, Rockstar Leeds created it for the PlayStation Portable, and Rockstar Toronto created it for the Wii. It is the follow-up to 2003’s Manhunt and was released in North America on October 29, 2007, and in the United Kingdom on October 31, 2008. Set in the fictional city of Cottonmouth, Manhunt 2 follows Daniel Lamb, a mentally ill patient suffering from amnesia, as he attempts to reclaim his identity, and Leo Kasper, a sociopathic assassin who assists Daniel on his journey.

Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive postponed Manhunt season 2 North American and European releases in July 2007 after it was refused classification in the United Kingdom and Ireland and given an Adults Only (AO) rating in the United States. Because Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony Computer Entertainment do not allow licensed releases of AO titles on their consoles, their potential customer base in the US would have been severely limited as well. Rockstar censored Manhunt season 2 in response to the rating issues, blurring the screen during Manhunt 2 executions and removing the scoring system, which rewarded players for particularly brutal killings. The ESRB rated this edited version M in the United States, and it was released on October 29. However, the BBFC refused to classify the edited version for release in the United Kingdom. Rockstar appealed their decision, and the Video Appeals Committee ultimately voted that Manhunt season 2 could be released with an 18 rating.

The improved gameplay, game engine, plot twists, darker storyline, and use of extreme violence were praised by critics and audiences, but its voice acting and outdated graphics drew mixed reactions. Before and after its release, the title sparked debate, attracting the attention of Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, anti-video game activist Jack Thompson, and several US senators. It was ranked first on Gameranx’s list of the “Top 25 Scariest Games of All Time,” and it was nominated for GameSpy’s 2007 Game of the Year Award for the PlayStation 2.

  • Anno 1602

    Anno 1602

    Game Description

Anno 1602: Creation of a New World, also known as 1602 A.D. in North America, is a 1998 construction and management video game released by Sunflowers Interactive and developed by Max Design. Set in the early modern period, the player must build colonies on small islands while managing resources, exploration, diplomacy, and trade. Anno 1602 design is notable for attempting to implement ‘progressive’ artificial intelligence, which means that the game’s pace changes in response to how quickly players act.

Anno 1602 was a commercial smash that drew buyers from outside the usual demographic of German computer games, including a sizable proportion of female customers. It was the best-selling computer game in the German market in 1998, and it remained the region’s best-selling game of all time by 2003, with over 1.7 million units sold in German-speaking countries. Anno1602 was less successful in international markets, but by 2004, it had sold over 2.7 million copies worldwide. The Anno series began with Anno 1602, which was followed by Anno 1503, Anno 1701, Anno 1404, Anno 2070, Anno 2205, and Anno 1800.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

    Game Description

Electronic Arts released Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, an action-adventure video game, in 2005. It is based on the same-named 2005 film. Electronic Arts published the game developed by three teams: EA UK, Magic Pockets, and EA Fusion UK.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was made available for the Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PlayStation Portable. Critics gave it mixed reviews, with some praising the scope of the spells and gameplay but being disappointed by the short length and lack of free-roaming components found in previous installments.

    Gameplay

The plot and characters of the novel and film are followed in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with the player controlling Harry Potter (voiced by Daniel Larner), Hermione Granger (Harper Marshall), and Ron Weasley (Gregg Chillin). The group casting mechanic from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is improved in this game. Because of the improved graphics, the characters resemble their film counterparts more closely than in previous games. The Goblet of Fire’s gameplay is much more action-oriented, as opposed to the puzzle and adventure elements found in previous games in the series.

Rather than free-roaming around Hogwarts Castle as in previous games, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is divided into specific levels. Levels are drawn from the novel on which Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is based, with levels ranging from the Quidditch World Cup to the Prefect’s bathroom and the Herbology greenhouses; all of which can be accessed via the in-game “pensieve.” Outside of combat, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire includes modes such as broomstick flying and underwater swimming.

In a series first, players can play Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with friends and combine their magic and spells to make them more powerful. Players can also use Accio to capture moving beans and boost their power with collectors, creatures, and character cards. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is divided into several non-consecutive levels, some of which are locked at the start of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire until the player collects enough Triwizard Shields.

  • SimCity Classic

    SimCity Classic

    Game Description

SimCity, also known as Micropolis or SimCity Classic, is a city-building simulation video game developed by Will Wright and released from 1989 to 1991 for a variety of platforms. SimCity has two-dimensional graphics and an overhead view. The goal of SimCity Classic is to build a city, develop residential and industrial areas, build infrastructure, and collect taxes to fund the future city development. Importance is placed on raising the population’s standard of living, maintaining a balance between different sectors, and monitoring the region’s environmental situation in order to keep the settlement from declining and going bankrupt.

SimCity was created independently by Will Wright in 1985 and did not see its first release until 1989. Because SimCity Classic lacked any of the arcade or action elements that dominated the video game market in the 1980s, video game publishers were hesitant to release it, until Broderbund agreed to distribute it. Although SimCity Classic sold poorly at first, positive feedback from the gaming press helped to boost sales. SimCity was released on several other platforms after becoming a best-seller, most notably the Super NES in 1991, where its gameplay was significantly improved with Nintendo’s involvement.

SimCity was a commercial success, selling 300,000 units for PCs and nearly 2 million units for the SNES. SimCity Classic was recognized as a new phenomenon in the gaming industry, and it challenged the widely held belief that computer games were primarily designed for children. Despite the lack of action elements, SimCity received critical acclaim for its innovative and addictive gameplay. SimCity Classic was deemed instructive and beneficial to the player’s understanding of the fundamentals of urban planning, politics, and economics by reviewers. SimCity has won numerous awards from various news organizations and associations. The success of SimCity signaled the beginning of the urban simulation video game genre, as well as Maxis’s tradition of producing non-linear simulation games, one of which – The Sims – would outsell all of its predecessors and become one of the best-selling franchises in the video game industry. It is widely regarded as one of the best video games ever created.
