The mouse is used to manipulate a multitude of “Gruntz,” small goblinoid creatures composed of baked clay (“goo”). The controls are typical of a real-time strategy game: commands are provided to Gruntz by first selecting them and then either right-clicking (causing them to move or attack) or left-clicking (causing them to move or attack) (for special actions such as laying bombs or digging holes).
Gruntz must collect tools in order to use them in battle or to solve puzzles. Each tool deals a different amount of damage. The most ineffective instrument is nothing at all, popularly known as bare hands. A barehand Grunt can be obtained in a variety of ways, including freshly produced Gruntz or a Boomerang Grunt that forgot to catch the boomerang. If he attacks first, the only Grunt a Barehanded can defeat is another bare hand. The Timebombs are the most powerful weapon, killing all Gruntz within a 1 square radius (including the Grunt himself if he is not careful). Most weapons have secondary uses, such as walking over spikes, swimming, shattering items, or digging holes. A grunt can only use one tool at a time.
Toys, in addition to tools, can be used to cause enemy Gruntz to stop and play with the toy for a set length of time while the player sneaks past them. Toys, like tools, come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The yo-yo is the shortest-lasting toy, breaking nearly instantaneously, leaving the Grunt little time to do anything but flee. The Beach Ball is the longest-lasting toy, taking the longest to break. The Go-Kart is the only thing that works as well as a Beach Ball. It doesn’t last as long in terms of information, but the animation of the toy actually breaking is rather long, making the Go-Kart last as long as the Beach Ball. A Grunt can only have one Toy at a time, just like tools, but he can always leave his current toy down and fetch another one, utilize that toy, then returns later to reclaim the original toy.
Powerups are acquired in the same way that tools and toys are, with the exception (aside from the red sparkles) that they only last for a limited period. Most powerups simply improve a Gruntz’s powers, such as increasing his health, speed, or defending him from harm, however, two of them (Deathtouch and Conversion) have different consequences. Deathtouch is a temporary tool that grants the grunt a short-range one-hit kill attack with no recharge time, for the duration of the Powerup. Conversion allows a Grunt to convert any other Grunt for the duration of the game, but it depletes the converter’s health until he dies, though converting another grunt restores health.
Gruntz has two gameplay modes: quests and combat. A quest is one in which the player must figure out how to get a grunt to the Warpstone and then bring the Grunt to the King. Battles have two to four players. The players can be controlled by either humans or computers. The goal is to defeat the opponents by bringing a Grunt inside their fort and defeating them with a variety of weaponry. When only one player remains, the game is over (or all the human players have resigned).
