Sonic R

Game Description

Sonic R is a Sega Saturn racing video game released in 1997 by Traveller’s Tales and Sonic Team. It is the third racer in the Sonic Hedgehog series and the first to use 3D computer graphics. The player controls one of ten Sonic characters as they race through various Sonic-themed race tracks in an attempt to stop Doctor Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds and enslaving the world. Sonic R has both single-player and multiplayer game modes, and while it is similar to kart racing games like Mario Kart, it focuses on jumping and exploration. Players can unlock secret characters by collecting items and completing objectives.

Development began nine months after the completion of Sonic 3D Blast in 1996. It was Traveller’s Tales and Sonic Team’s second collaboration, and it was designed to take advantage of the Saturn hardware. Sonic Team created the race tracks, while Traveller’s Tales implemented and programmed them using a custom game engine. Richard Jacques composed the soundtrack, and several tracks from the spriters resource sonic r, most notably “Super Sonic Racing,” have been reused in subsequent Sonic games. Sega released the spriters resource sonic r for the Saturn in late 1997, Windows the following year, and the GameCube and PlayStation 2 in 2005 as part of the Sonic Gems Collection.

Sonic R was Saturn’s only original Sonic title; Sonic 3D Blast is a port of the Mega Drive game, and Sonic Jam is a compilation of the first four Sonic games. The spriters resource sonic r received mixed reviews at first, with a more negative reception later on. It received praise for its visuals and level design, but it was panned for its controls and a short length. Meanwhile, Jacques’ soundtrack divided fans, who either thought it was catchy and well-produced or thought it was out of place in a racing game. Sega would revisit the racing genre in future Sonic games as a result of an interest in Sonic R, leading to the development of titles such as Sonic Riders (2006).
